The Desktop Widgets website will be shutting down on April 10, 2012. Developer uploads of new Widgets will end on April 3, 2012. Due to this, consumer downloads of new and updated desktop widgets will end on April 3, 2012. Desktop widgets will continue to work for the foreseeable future with a new Consumer Terms of Use: http://info.yahoo.com/legal/us/yahoo/konfa...terms-1821.html

Now the good news. Konfabulator is certainly not dead. Konfabulator is what powers more than 8 million TVs running Yahoo! Connected TV Apps. Yahoo! TV Apps are extremely easy to develop. The TVs run Linux and use a specially modified version of the Yahoo! Widget Engine, a fifth generation application platform derived from the legendary Konfabulator desktop widget platform. We have further extended and simplified widget development by building a JavaScript framework which abstracts most of the complexity from Konfabulator.

How to get started:
1. Get the Yahoo! Connected TV Widget Developer Kit (WDK)
2. Build something awesome!
3. Submit to Yahoo!
4. Your will go live and become available to millions of TVs around the world

Join the Yahoo! Connected TV forums to find out more.

Yes great opportunity, until Yahoo decides to let developers and users down again and move on to something else. dry.gif I certainly won't put my trust again in anything done by Yahoo.

And any of us who don't (nor have any plans to) use Yahoo!-equipped TVs are SOL. That sucks.

I think this says it all.

If I could re-post this a thousand times to represent the minimum of a thousand folks who feel the same way, I would. Of course, I will not spam like that. Just saying.

People spent YEARS working, for free, to be of help to other people. Then Yahoo, yet another BIG CORPORATION comes along and says "ooo, lookie here, we can just steal all this and make a ton of money off it."

It makes me ill. wacko.gif

And I won't be trusting anything coming out of Yahoo. Not that this was the first indication to me but this is the final straw. Yahoo knows where I'd suggest it go....

No new posts in years or users in months and rumored the forums will close 2012Q4 (already past).

Sad days.

I've created a group on DeviantArt where past and present Yahoo Widgeteers can post their old widgets. All that is needed is a preview image, a brief description and a .widget.

http://yahoowidgeteers.deviantart.com/

I have started the ball rolling by posting my own steampunk widgets and inviting a few past widgeteers to post.

My own personal opinion is that the YWE! will continue to work with windows and the Mac OS/x for the forseeable future, the combination of Photoshop, the conversion script and javascript is still an elegant solution for creating desktop widgets so it is still my starting point. I am starting to convert to xwidgets but YWE! is still my preferred working environment.

Some will read this announcement and ignore it but please for the sake of others, posterity or to provide the world with a useful resource, do joinDeviantArt, do post your widgets and leave a comment or two on the widgets that are already there.
